Therapeutic Potential of Seaweed-Derived Laminaran: Attenuation of Clinical Drug Cytotoxicity and Reactive Oxygen Species Scavenging

β-glucan has been shown to be effective for several diseases such as immune regulation and blood pressure suppression. Seaweed contains a β-1,3/1,6-glucan called laminaran. The present commercial source of is black yeast; however, fermentation process using organic carbon substrates makes production unsustainable, whereas macroalgae provide sustainable alternative with the use CO2 seawater growth substrates. However, bioactivity studies on laminaran are limited. We aimed evaluate whether can scavenge reactive oxygen species (ROS) attenuate cytotoxicity caused by clinical drugs indomethacin (Ind) dabigatran (Dab). Electron spin resonance assay revealed that scavenged singlet (1O2) superoxide anions (O2•−) directly but did not hydroxyl radicals (•OH). Mitochondrial ROS detection dye showed mitochondrial O2•− produced upon administration Ind or Dab. Moreover, significant reductions in •OH peroxynitrate (ONOO−) levels were observed. Since ONOO− generated from cells, could indirectly suppress generation via removal O2•−. Both Dab induce cell injury production. Laminaran attenuated derived these may represent functional food anti-aging disease prevention properties.
